May 8, 2010, the Council of DSUCC, Pam Gaston, Teri Neeley, Linda Godfrey and Suzanne Briner met with the Senior Pastor, Len Sylvester and Associate Pastor, Clint Reynolds of the Church of the Palms UCC. The meeting lasted two hours and many things were discussed regarding DSUCC. Thanks to all of you for your prayers regarding the wisdom and the outcome of this meeting.

The following things were decided:

  1. 1. There will no longer be a church service for Desert Spirit UCC.
  2. Desert Spirit UCC will become Desert Spirit UCC Ministries....or Desert Spirit Ministries for short.
  3. Desert Spirit Ministries will be housed within the congregation of The Church of the Palms but will remain separate in membership to Desert Spirit UCC. Those ministries are meant to enhance the lives of the people at The Church of the Palms (median age is 80 years old) and also the lives of those who are direct recipients of Desert Spirit Ministries through mission work.
  4. Contained within Desert Spirit Ministries are:
  5. a. The Craft Club
    b. Living The Questions
    c. PRAISE Music Ministries
    d. SPIRIT Ministries
  6. At the current time, the main ministry through missions of Desert Spirit Ministries will be for The New Life Center for the remainder of the year through December.
  7. Contemporary Worship Services will be provided for Church of the Palms by Desert Spirit Ministries once a month. This will begin after the summer months and will be announced at a later date.
  8. SPIRIT Ministries will continue to serve any and all venues on behalf of the New Life Center.
  9. PRAISE Music Ministries will continue to serve the Church of the Palms and perform concerts for the benefit of The New Life Center and Elder missions.
  10. All members of Desert Spirit United Church of Christ will automatically become members of Desert Spirit Ministries unless those members would prefer to disassociate themselves from Desert Spirit Ministries/Desert Spirit UCC.. This can be done by emailing Pam Gaston at rrr97w@msn.com.
  11. Desert Spirit Ministries will participate in the regular services of The Church of the Palms as Worship Leaders, Ushers, Greeters, Hosts/Hostesses and Musicians as volunteers/missionaries/visionaries and also participate in church functions of The Church of The Palms as a church home.
Please note that DSM is NOT recommending that everyone affiliated with DSM become associated with The Church of the Palms. Worship is a personal experience that can be found in many different places. DSM is strictly mission based not church based but our base camp in which we are housed is The Church of the Palms.

If you choose not to not attend this church, any church, or you want to attend another church and you find that encounter enriches your life, it does not prohibit you from belonging to DSM whose main concern is not a "service" but rather "service" to others.

SPIRIT Ministries is now going forward to record a new second CD. A grand total of $950 has been collected thus far for this event. If you would like to see certain songs recorded on this CD, please email Pam Gaston @ rrr97w@msn.com or Sherry Brosor @ Brosorfamily@hotmail.com or Teri Neeley @ Weeza79@q.com or Debra Sanders @ dsanders1957@aol.com with the names of those songs you would like to see recorded and if known, the composer. Also, PRAISE will be on this CD as well. Your input and support is appreciated so much.

Financial Report: There is $10,600 in the treasury. The last refurbish of a casita cost DSM, $1,000. We are still behind in replacing that cost by $500. The cost of the last CD that was recorded by SPIRIT was $3,000. Out of that $3,000, SPIRIT contributed $800 and as of this date, have sold 137 CDs for $20 each. This means that our mission work is basically breaking even at this point. Your financial support is always appreciated and it is tax deductible. Thank you for your help and your constant prayers.

Mission Report: On Saturday, May 8th, a truck load of items was delivered to The New Life Center. There were 14 boxes/bags of diapers, towels and sundry items delivered to The New Life Center and 35 bags of clothes, stuffed animals and household items taken to Hope's Closet. Also after the Benefit Concert, $135 was collected in checks that went directly to The New Life Center and $240 was put towards different ministries for The New Life Center through DSM.

Whoever you are, wherever you are going on life's journey, whatever you stand for or against.....we can agree to disagree....one thing is always certain..you are welcome in this place.....
